> DESCRIPTION
In his first solo exhibition with SolwayJones, Robert Walker presents Appropriate Technologies, an exhibition of new paintings and sculpture.  An accompanying exhibition catalogue, with an essay by Collette Chattopadhyay, is available in conjunction with Gallery Gen in Tokyo, Japan.

The visual effect of Walker’s recent work is both subtle and hypnotic. Approaching painting as a sculptor, Robert Walker’s new work combines the usage of intricate Bas-relief surfaces produced from mutli-layers of segmented paint or made through the process of extruding individual threads of acrylic and fusing them together as small bundles, producing monochromatic images and topographical surface areas.

In Sitting Under the Piano, a recent diptych work, Walker alternates color and texture back and forth with cross-hatching and chromatic configurations produced from dense extruded lines of acrylic paint.  In the new painting Good Radar, multiple sections of mosaic color fragments crisscross and whirl with dazzling excitement.  With the new sculptures, Trick Genre Numbers 3, 4, 5, Walker has fabricated a series of architectural objects made from a process of pressing and hand carving sections of dried pigment, producing miniaturized Buddhist stupas and pagodas.  Hard Drawing, Yellow Radiating Lines on Grey Rubber, Eye Syncopation and Hard Drawing, White & Grey Dots on Black Rubber are all from the artist’s ongoing Hard Drawing Series of small vertical works made with ink and resin painted on wood or rubber.
