> DESCRIPTION
The Happy Lion is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of New York based artist Ted O'Sullivan entitled Five Unreachable Truths. The show consists of five large oil paintings of abstracted imagery which preternaturally question ideas of universal truths.
Utilizing broad paint strokes O'Sullivan's confident compositions include religious and spiritual references, such as the divine white light of ascension, and the moments of epiphany. Death and rebirth, as well as physical metamorphosis are alluded to as Rorschach-like shapes seem to splay themselves from the inside out to the edges of the canvas. Totemic figures, perhaps beacons or guardians rise from the darkened nether regions of the painting, ambiguous yet not at all ambivalent. O' Sullivan has said that “painting is an antidote to reality”, and his work pointedly considers what is real in the visual and in the metaphysical.
Ted O'Sullivan is a graduate of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and recently received his MFA from the School of the Visual Arts, New York, in 2006. He lives and works in Brooklyn.
Please note the gallery will be closed from December 23 — January 2 for the holidays.
