WAINER VACCARI

FIGHTS

OPENING SATURDAY 28th FEBRUARY 2009 AT 6PM

The 28th of February marks the solo Los Angeles debut of Wainer Vaccari with an exhibition, entitled Fights, at Bone lli Contemporary.

The exhibition offers a preview of an important selection of paintings which all demonstrate the artist’s openly declared connections with the world of boxing, an association that has matured and grown over the past six years through a series of well-defined stages in the artistic journey of this artist from Modena.

In this vein – beginning with a solo exhibition at the Kunsthaus in Hamburg in 2005, where 53 portraits of the great names in boxing of the twentieth century were on display– we can enumerate participation at many exhibitions dedicated to sporting themes in general or explicitly to the Noble Art.

Among these we must mention: two commemorative exhibitions in 2006 in honour of the memory of Primo Carnera, one of which took place in the boxer’s home town of Sequals and a second. larger one in the Palazzo della Ragione in Milan; the 57th Premio Michetti di Francavilla al Mare (Chieti), in 2008 the Triennale d’Arte Contemporanea in Beijing concurrently with the Olympic Games which took place in the Chinese capital, as well as numerous individual exhibitions where the artist always recreated boxing matches on his canvasses.

Vaccari’s interest in boxing can be understood in both his appreciation for those values that are intrinsic to this sport – courage and honour – as well as his profound knowledge of the events that have marked history.  Therefore these same events drive him to choose this discipline knowingly in an inner need to express incessant combat and to challenge the inevitable risks that both the artist and the boxer must face in their sport.  A symbol that in boxers – from the famous glories of the past to the fresher paladins of this highly esteemed sport -  fully expresses Vaccari’s impulsive and concise language, a language imbued with such personal symbols that they speak and appropriate a multitude of existing forms.
