Madeleine Graves began her practice over twenty years ago in Pasadena, studying under Phil Cornelius, and subsequently continued her studies in the far flung states of Alaska and Hawaii. In Hawaii, her ceramics were heavily influenced by Hawaiian quilt designs which she reinterpreted and then applied to her wheel thrown forms. After successfully showing these in galleries throughout Hawaii she traveled extensively throughout Europe and North America as she split her time between studios in France and Mexico. Her love of travel and other cultures eventually influenced her designs beyond the Hawaiian quilts with the introduction of imagery from other parts of the world while still maintaining the symmetry of the quilt patterns. She has recently returned her pottery practice back to Pasadena where her work continues to feature these delightfully detailed patterns.
