The MAN Show features work by Mark Acetelli and John Scane, two exemplary Los Angeles based painters who capture representational images of man and animal in new, modern contexts. The show is curated by Rebecca O’Leary and was conceived in response to Pharmaka’s concurrent exhibition, New Mythologies: abstract painting by female artists. In contrast to New Mythologies, The MAN Show features work that is at the other end of the spectrum: male painters using familiar, mythological images and a masculine aesthetic reminiscent of Hollywood’s old western films. Both Acetelli and Scane are successful in using elements of ‘old’ mythology against modern backdrops and both create work that is mystifying and demystifying all at once.
