Initiated in 2004, the Delusionarium series explores the huge and open topic of the discourse of the Romantic. Loaded with potential meanings and aesthetic conversations, the topic is broad enough to allow for a great range of responses from artists. Though there are occasional links in sensibility and/or form between projects, each Delusionarium artist poses his/her own specific relationship to the topic and to the conditions of the site. Subject matter, materials, and methodology all range widely.
Delusionarium 4 includes works produced in various forms: installation, performance, drawing, painting, photo, sculpture, video, and collaboration.
In the execution of Delusionarium 4 the curatorial/organizational agenda of the Delusionarium series has taken great steps toward a more collaborative, social process. Many decisions were made collectively among Benson and the 3 gallery directors, John Knuth, Spencer Douglass, and David Salow. Other decisions were influenced heavily by artists’ input. The galleries’ support for the concept of the exhibition developed into a unique opportunity for the 24 artists, some of whom elected to show work in more than 1 space. Others decided to produce works that slip into interaction with each other, inside a sort of collaborative show within a show. In order to add complexity to the blurring of 1 show into 3, each gallery has an exhibition sub-title, devised by an artist showing at that space. |
