Arena 1 Gallery in collaboration with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Los Angeles is pleased to present Overpainting, an exhibition of 5 Northern Italian artists who work in a manner of stratification: the sedimentation of materials. Painting over their works, they utilize processes which are acts of cancellation to arrive at new images. Paola Fonticoli does so with overlapping sheets of plexiglass,  Elena Modorati by dripping wax on written pages, Sonia Costantini and Paolo Iacchetti by a continual re-evaluation and repainting of their monochromatic paintings and Albano Morandi by creating an intervention on layers of surface which previously had quite different purposes. Overpainting is about the contemporary practice of re-evaluation and re-painting.  The exhibition also includes a separate gallery of works by five Southern Californian artists (Matthew May, Gegam Kacherian, Gary Paller, Jamie Russom, and Chris Trueman) who will be participating in an exchange show at the Fondazione Vittorio Leonesio in Puegnago del Garda, Italy in May.
