Leon Benn’s paintings and monoprints trace junctures in time where memories from his past illustrate fleeting periods of clarity. Working with a laid back narrative of his own imaginings, these paintings depict loosely rendered landscapes and solitary figures such as a groundskeeper, a baseball pitcher on the mound, and a bikini clad woman drinking from a bottle. Relying on the poetic murmurs of late night bar drawings, these narratives often arrive out of Benn’s consideration of the time spent with those closest to him including his wife, father, and grandmother.

For Benn, the isolated baseball pitcher illustrates the time spent as a child with his father playing little league, as well as the hours after the games in nostalgic places like pizza parlors, where baseball games were played on the television amongst bizarre table tops littered with beer cans. In Pitching Rotations, these moody environments are depicted alongside surreal and psychedelic landscapes. Loneliness, for Benn, is reimagined through the solitary experience of these figures, landscapes, and interiors. These dense and somber paintings evoke our collective desires and the human experience of seclusion and longing.
