ARENA 1 Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Luna Luna in the Sky. Will You Make Me Laugh or Cry? This special exhibition, curated by Steven Hull opens in conjunction with the 4th anniversary celebration of the Santa Monica Art Studios on Saturday, October 18, 2008.
For this exhibition, Steven Hull asked a group of artists and writers to make works about the ever-present moon. Large artworks by 13 contemporary artists will be on view and a limited edition book of fiction and drawings based on the exhibition and designed by Jon Sueda will be available. Writers include Ben Ehrenreich, Trinie Dalton, Simon Leung, Benjamin Weissman, Kevin Smith, Lynne Tillman, Vince Johnson, Laszlo Borsai, Marisol Limon Martinez, Annie Buckley. During the opening reception guests are invited to have their pictures taken in an old-fashioned Paper Moon photo booth, a site-specific installation by Sabine Pearlman.
A trip to Hamburg, Germany in 1987 serendipitously led Steven Hull to Luna Luna Park, a collaborative exhibition curated by Andre Heller. This art carnival installation, has inspired each of Hull’s collaborative projects including Ab Ovo and Nothing Moments, and directly informs this exhibition. The title Luna Luna in the Sky. Will You Make Me Laugh or Cry? comes from a Keith Haring t-shirt made for the Luna Luna Park exhibition. In keeping in this tradition Hull has also made a limited edition t-shirt and book bag for this show.
ARENA 1 is an exhibition space founded by Santa Monica Art Studios directors Yossi Govrin and Sherry Frumkin. Based in an historic hangar at the Santa Monica Airport, ARENA 1 invites internationally known as well as newly established curators to develop innovative and compelling exhibitions.
