Sam Amato’s new work continues themes he has examined in the last couple of decades. These include Bodhisattva figures and mandalas, as well as his paintings of chairs and nature. The artist’s style evokes a spiritual path, the moments of searching, contemplating and discovery are clearly visible in his work. His mystical figures are contemplative and humble, yet powerful and bold. It is tempting to say he paints empty chairs, however Amato’s chairs relate directly to his spiritual figures and speak of the same mysticism and inner awareness, as if to suggest the sitter had evolved to a higher existence. And, when the artist works with nature, whether a simple flower or a blossoming vista, the inwardness shifts to a celebration of color, patterns and markings, leaving human concerns behind.
