“This exhibit is a collection of work about my daughter, Nora. I have been painting her for three years and it is my intention to continue to paint and draw her regularly for the rest of my days. As she grows, the connection to my once lost inner-child deepens. I want to absorb as much of her as I can and integrate her complex development into my being. Through painting her, I am falling in love with what it means to be a little girl. Her feelings, her interests, her ability to manipulate with a bright smile and the purposeful pretend pout she gives when it doesn’t work. Hers is a multifaceted world of pink, filled with dance, animals, and make believe – yet constricted by the minimal experiences of a three year old. Everything that encompasses her being utterly mesmerizes me, and that awe is placed on canvas in the form of her image.”
“When thinking of the world as she perceives it, I find a hippodrome to be a suiting metaphor. Hippodromes were the stadiums in ancient Greece and Rome where horse and chariot races occurred. An open-air arena with walls all around, much like the world of a child – imaginations that soar to the sky but living within such enclosed and sheltered environments. New ideas racing by constantly as they grab the reigns and grow as fast as we can blink.”
“Watching my daughter reminds me of what it was like to be a little girl. I recall sitting alone on a hill on the side of our house, picking beautiful little orange flowers and feeling at peace. I wanted to take that feeling and create paintings for an exhibit that represent the experience of walking into a little girl’s safe place. Private, precious, personal cozy moments of dreaming in her hippodrome.”-Nicole Waszak
The exhibition will run from June 5 – July 6, 2013
