The following is a statement by curator Thomas Whittaker Kidd:
These artists make visible their paths to their inner worlds, where human and animal behavior often becomes indistinguishable. Here is where we see visions of their ideas that offer views into their individual natures.
Artists whose imagery appears out of an intuitive process take us down an unpaved road, where the anticipated direction seems unclear but has the attraction of a scenic highway vista point or teen outdoor party spot. They seem to be driving a thought with a loose grip in search of what’s beneath material concrete learned consciousness. This view from the inside (or the outside looking in) reveals our inner experiences that interact with our outer experiences and gives us access to direct personal awareness of what more freedom feels like outside conscious barriers, within a cultural system that often holds us back.
Power generated from the place where our minds are constantly active -- the inner consciousness and the instinctual -- produces these artists’ subject matter and, in some cases, more through the execution of their work, creates a road of invention from a known malleable starting point. A viewer can see a record of the artists’ travels, both internally, by how the iconography connects like a multilayered map of free streaming thought patterns, and physically, in how the artists’ creative processes transport them from the limitations of concrete rational and analytical construction.
