Following a massive sold out exhibition at C.A.V.E. Gallery last November, Restitution Press, AKA Ryan Graeff, returns to the gallery for a smaller scaled show inspired by the streets and community of Venice Beach. Restitution Press has been non-stop, pushing the boundaries and developing the skills of his trademark screen-print and paint process creating multi-layered abstraction juxtaposed with crisp, hand-painted detail. The pieces are engaging, full of recognizable imagery filtered through the lens of Restitution Press.
This new work revolves around themes of crafting and the strength of the artist grassroots movements that were sparked in Venice Beach. A collection of rare, vintage 1950's magazines form the collaged backdrop to sunset colored washes of acrylic and screen-printed photos that reflect a historic community always looking ahead.
Venice Beach has long been known as a destination famous for attracting artists from around the world. One of those artists was Restitution Press' Great Grandma Osborn, RIP, who came to Venice Beach in the 1930s to look for work as an illustrator. By chance she was discovered by Disney on the famous Venice Beach boardwalk drawing characters. Osborn went on to draw at Disney for over 20 years, working on a variety of cartoons including "Mr Magoo".
Restitution Press' "Venice Beach Peach" series, celebrates the home-crafters movements and artisans who create at home than take to the Venice board walk to be discovered.
