> DESCRIPTION

Luis De Jesus Los Angeles is pleased to announce ELEGIES: A Project in Printa series of hybrid prints created by Los Angeles-based artist MARA DE LUCA during her 2012-2013 residency at the Irvine Fine Arts Center.  The exhibition, curated by Carl Berg, will be on view at the Irvine Fine Arts Center from March 9 through April 20, 2013.  This series of ten prints relates to De Luca's current project in painting, ELEGIES, presented in CRUISE COLLECTION 2013 at Luis De Jesus Los Angeles in Culver City through March 30, 2013.

For this project, twelve individual layers are mixed and matched to generate ten distinct images. De Luca has first employed experimental intaglio processes such as aquatint, spit bite and soap ground on zinc plates to create the cloudy, dramatic lighting effects prevalent throughout her work. Once printed, the intaglio plates have then been "translated" to a screenprint form, to be combined and layered into a final "state" through an intuitive process similar to that which operates in her paintings. As with her work in painting, De Luca plays with transparency, opacity and evocative color to generate the mood and atmosphere specific to the ELEGIES project.

This project has been made possible with the support and generosity of the Irvine Fine Arts Center and the City of Irvine, CA.
