Concurrently on view in Thinkspace's Project Room is Michael Ramstead's Ghosts Upon the Walls. Ramstead is based out of Long Beach, CA and has been working with a highly refined style of oil painting. The artist's current body of work combines contemporary influences with traditional painting techniques and styles of the Old Masters. The compelling juxtaposition of execution and contemporary subject matter results in a unique recombinant style all the artist's own.
Ghosts Upon the Walls combines the artist's thoughtful and accomplished portraiture with surreal and paranormal imagery. Seemingly allegorical at times, the paintings tap into an iconography and set of metaphorical symbols all their own. Through the use of an intense chiaroscuro technique, reminiscent of historical Baroque painting, and executed with the technical refinement of the Old Masters, Ramstead's works are haunting and beautiful. The artist captures the hollows of the psychological portrait in the midst of a world of animated shadows.
