> DESCRIPTION

Lora Schlesinger is pleased to announce Lawrence Gipe’s seventh solo exhibition with the gallery. Salon features thirty small paintings derived from a diverse pool of archival images. The show opens Saturday, January 12 from 5 – 7 pm and is on view through February 23, 2013.

Ranging from landscapes (natural and industrial) to genre portraiture, the subject matter is inextricably bound to the 20th Century, encoded deeply by that prior era’s fascination with technology, progress and ideology. Executed using layers of varnishes and glazes, the style of these works references the 19th Century, transporting them further back in time and melding photography and the academic conventions of painting into a nostalgic fusion.

In the connecting small gallery, Gipe creates a “21st Century Annex” with the display of two stark graphite drawings based on photos taken of riot police during the Occupy Frankfurt protest in 2011.  These pieces provide a contrast with the front room’s vision of a romanticized world, and suggest the continuation of a grim, authoritarian reality.

Since 1986, Lawrence Gipe has had 49 solo exhibitions in galleries and museums in the US and Germany. Later this year, Zero+ Publishing will release a book on his career, “Lawrence Gipe, Century of Progress”. A mid-career survey, “3 Five-Year Plans: Lawrence Gipe, 1990-2005”, was organized in 2006 by Marilyn Zeitlin at the University Art Museum, Tempe, Arizona. In 2001, Gipe executed a mural commission for the lobby of the Federal Reserve Bank Headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. He has received two NEA Individual Fellowship Grants (1989 and 1996). He is currently an Associate Professor of Painting and Drawing at the University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ.

Articles and reviews about his work have appeared in Vanity Fair, Harper’s Magazine, The New York Times, The Huffington Post, The New York Times Magazine, Art and Antiques, L.A. Weekly, Architectural Digest, Elle, The Los Angeles Times, Talk, ArtForum, ArtNews, Art in America, Flash Art, Village Voice, Time Out New York, Kunstforum (Germany); BijutsuTecho (Japan); Applaus (Germany) and others.

As an art critic and writer, Gipe has contributed reviews and feature articles to Artillery, Flash Art, ArtScribe (England) and the Santa Barbara Independent; from 1988-89, he was a regular art columnist for the L.A. Weekly.

Gipe’s work has been collected by individuals, foundations and institutions including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Norton Museum of Art, Palm Beach, FL; High Museum in Atlanta, GA; Kemper Art Museum, St. Louis, MO; the Yale University Library Collection and the Brooklyn Museum, New York
