(C)overt A Group Exhibition by 5790projects
Featuring work by: Andy Kolar, Annelie McKenzie, Jason Ramos, Becca Shewmake
5790projects is thrilled to announce its fourth and final quarterly pop-up group exhibition for 2012, (C)overt, featuring four unrepresented LA-based painters. The manner in which we present ourselves is a carefully tailored amalgamation of hide and reveal. Our innermost selves are often concealed beneath a diligently molded guise, as favored traits act as the forefront of our presented selfhood. In (C)overt, each artist grapples with a similar equilibrium of the hidden and unveiled – both aesthetic and conceptual attributes are strategically divulged, annihilated, obscured, and intimated. While Shewmake and Kolar delve into the psychological associations of pure abstraction, McKenzie and Ramos play upon enigmatic nostalgic imagery and forms – both techniques leaving much to the imagination. 5
790projects focuses on providing an exhibition platform for emerging artists based in Los Angeles. Through a combination of selected artist submissions and invitations, the entity curates local pop-up exhibitions throughout Southern California. The artists included in (C)overt encompass a diverse miscellany of practice and exhibition history. Andy Kolar (IA) received his MFA from CSULB, and has since exhibited at the Torrance Art Museum (CA), Orange County Museum of Art (CA), and Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (CA), among others. Annelie McKenzie (Calgary) will receive her MFA from CSULB in May of 2013, and was the recipient of the 2012 "Against the Grain" artist grant. Jason Ramos (TX) has shown extensively throughout California, and is the Director of RAID Projects (CA). Becca Shewmake (MN) will receive her MFA from CSULB in May of 2013, and has shown at the University Art Museum (CA), Angels Gate Cultural Center (CA), and DeVos Art Museum (MI), among others. All of the artists live and work in Los Angeles.
