> DESCRIPTION

Southern California based artist John McLaughlin (1898-1976) rose to prominence in the mid-twentieth century as a painter of abstract canvases that employed basic shapes and flat planes of color. In 1962 and 1963, he was invited to print with the Tamarind Lithography Workshop, a Los Angeles institution devoted to promoting the lithographic arts and teaching printers and artists to work in this medium.

Never before shown at LACMA, these prints fulfill McLaughlin’s desire to create an art of abstraction and balance. He wanted his art to engage both the eye and the mind of viewers in a free and open manner that inspires contemplation.
