In conjunction with the exhibition Drawing Surrealism, LACMA presents a selection from the permanent collection of work by Los Angeles based artist Jim Shaw.
A polyphony of sources—drawn from subculture and art history without bias or preference—crowd Shaw’s paintings, drawings, sculptures, performances and videos.
Shaw worked intensively throughout the 1990s on two interrelated bodies of work, Dream Drawings and Dream Objects; those projects still inform his current practice. The pencil drawings included in the exhibition emerged from his own dream diaries and are rendered in panels resembling comic books or storyboards. Shaw’s Dream Drawings and Dream Objects emanate from his own critical approach to the history of surrealism, and his insatiable interest in popular culture.
