“Deconstructed/Reconstructed Identities”, a mixed- and multi-media art exhibition, produced as a rolling series of works by student artists of the Contemporary Art Theory and Practice Program, Santa Monica College, under Professor Linda G Lopez, Upstairs @ The Market Gallery in downtown Los Angeles.
The theme of personal and artistic identity as a complex series of informed, constructed visual explorations is the theme of the series of work. Asked to deconstruct and reappraise their personal “stories” and, albeit, often mediated experiences through art making, the artists included in this exhibition re-construct and reveal their own multiple, often contradictory identities. The works straddle a continuum from “the real” grounded in materiality and “made by hand” to media driven works, executed with both high and low tech media.
The work includes a spectrum of media and genres that challenge, confront, perform, and project authentic perspectives regarding the existential nature of the “self”. The artists paintings, performances, installations and photography provide the audience a prismatic lens by which they may view their own notion of the self in this multi-media collaborative series.
Scheduled Saturdays only, August 4-25
