> DESCRIPTION

As an emerging artist in 1990, Greg Colson began developing unique visual and conceptual trajectories that continue to evolve today.  More than twenty years after Roberta Smith named him to the New York Times Faces To Watch list, Patrick Painter Inc. is pleased to present Greg Colson: Early Works; a selection of objects from that initial period in the artist's practice.

The wall works on display in the West Gallery are illustrative of Colson's signature deadpan relationship to the formulaic.  In the guise of something diagrammatical, Colson's work slowly reveals itself to be inconclusive, warped or otherwise imperfect, a sly investigation into our collective preoccupation with order.  By arranging disparate materials and aesthetic information into apparently ordered visual alignments Colson has consistently offered poetic reminders of our own hopelessly imperfect humanity.

Colson has exhibited throughout the United States and Europe. His solo exhibitions include Sperone Westwater, New York; Konrad Fischer Galerie, Dusseldorf; Kunsthalle Lophem, Bruges, Belgium; Gian Enzo Sperone, Rome; and the Lannan Museum, Lake Worth, FL. Colson's work has been included in group shows at the Leipzig Museum of Fine Arts, Germany; Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Sweden; Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil, Mexico City; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Getty Center, Los Angeles; and many others.  His work is held in numerous permanent collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Panza Collection, Varese, Italy; and the Moderna Museet, Stockholm.  Colson lives and works in Venice, California.
