modern, abstract

In her new body of work, painter Lorraine Lubner has reduced her imagery to a series of horizontal bands of color.  Unlike many formal abstractions, these works are painted freehand, the artist focusing on the dynamic interaction of the color bands.  There is an electric vibrancy to these paintings in which pulsing waves of light and color will have the viewer’s eyes dancing across each canvas.  As simple as the paintings might seem in their imagery, they are abundantly complex in the depth of layering, color-play, and dense brushwork.  There is a real sense of musicality and movement to these works.  Her canvases seem to capture motion like a live video stream.  These are smart and self-assured paintings that will draw you in, make you look closely, and make strong demands of your visual perception.
