The Arts Council of American Jewish University announced today that a new exhibit, Abstract: Expressing Ideas and Emotions through Color and Line, will open at the university’s Platt and Borstein Galleries on Sunday, June 10, 2012.
The exhibit, which features the work of Renée Amitai, Miriam Ancis, Margaret W. Gallegos, and Joan Tucker, will host a “Meet the Artists” reception on Sunday, June 24 from 3:00 to 5:00 P.M.
The title of the show, based on Merriam Webster's definition, speaks to the possibilities inherent in art when the language of paint is not literal.
Renée Amitai graduated from l'Ecole des Beaux Arts de Paris and gained professional experience in design and architecture in France, Israel, Italy and America. She produces paintings that express her inner vision of the mystery and wonder of the life cycle and the spiritual connection of the water, seas, and all living things on the earth.
Miriam Ancis is an ordained rabbi whose recent drawings and collages evoke elegies of her mother. She explores the idea that our bodies, as we move through time, echo the natural balance of order and chaos in the world – a balance that is fragile and can be disrupted at any moment.
Margaret W. Gallegos has come to value the evocative qualities of her work over the depiction of physical reality. Her approach is a push-pull between the willful and mindless, so that the material has an opportunity to speak to her and suggest configurations based on random accidents.
Joan Tucker’s mixed-media pieces often begin with a scrap of something saved and a germ of an idea that reveals itself to her as she’s working. The painting waits for her to discover it and in turn, rewards the viewer’s exploration of the complex terrain of her surfaces.
The Platt and Borstein Galleries are located at American Jewish University, 15600 Mulholland Drive in Bel Air. The exhibit will run through August 26, 2012. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 10:00AM – 7:00PM, Friday 10:00AM – 2:00PM. The gallery will be closed on July 4, 2012.
