> DESCRIPTION

Rooted in transience, customized paint schemes and an overall sense of awkwardness, the paintings that comprise Kevin Wingate's first solo show strive to ripple across ideas of Beauty, highlighted by abstraction as image.  Wingate's attraction to painting styles elevated by sub-cultures is apparent in layer after layer of built up, sprayed and sanded paint and in the glossy cut out surfaces that comprise his first solo show at acuna-hansen gallery.

Kevin Wingate is an artist living in Los Angeles.  He grew up in Missouri, Texas, Georgia and back again in Missouri, always following the trail of building materials and leaving fresh roots and unsold homes.  He moved to Los Angeles in 1999.

He received an M.F.A. from the University of California, San Diego and was recently included in Modular at White Flag in St. Louis, MO.  Kevin currently resides next to a mountain in the northeast corner of L.A.
