> DESCRIPTION
The nimble and expert seven-piece Mingus Dynasty has no small task, to carry on the legacy of the most dynamic bandleader, bassist and composer in the history of jazz — Charles Mingus. Luckily the group is large on talent, regularly tackling with fiery panache the more than 300 compositions left behind by the prolific jazz great, including “Better Git It in Your Soul,” “Haitian Fight Song” and “Pithecanthropus Erectus.” Mingus Dynasty was the first band Sue Mingus organized after her husband Charles’ death in 1979. Now, 30 years later, his rich legacy ignites the bandstand as new generations of musicians — many of them not even alive during the composer’s lifetime — add their individual voices and continue to interpret and build upon his compositions.
