"The process of scientific discovery is, in effect, a continual flight from wonder." -Albert Einstein
"The pursuit of truth and beauty is a sphere of activity in which we are permitted to remain children all our lives." -Albert Einstein
A child’s perspective—straightforward, devoid of pretense, and unflinching in its outlook—invigorates the imagination; as adults we are continually encouraged to cast aside our preconceived notions and approach the world from a child's point of view. Religious leaders such as Buddha and Jesus Christ, writers and intellectuals like Balzac, Huxley and Proust, as well as the renowned physicist Albert Einstein all encouraged us to perceive art and science through a child's eyes. Accessing our inner child broadens our view of the world and stimulates our minds, allowing for greater degrees of discovery, curiosity, compassion, and wonder.
This concept is the basis of the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum’s exhibition, Flights from Wonder, on view February 26 - April 22, 2012. For this exhibition, CAF's galleries will be transformed into a series of hands-on, interactive installations that heighten the synergy between artists and audience and challenge children and adults to re-imagine their relationship to art. The exhibition explores alternate ways to experience art by posing questions such as: How do children react and relate to the art of our time? How do we experience contemporary art? What new awareness can we acquire from children? Incorporating an internationally recognized group of artists, Flights from Wonder empowers audiences (of all ages/backgrounds) to think, play, and create through visually dazzling displays, engagement in art-making activities, and in-depth educational outreach initiatives with community partners.
By creating resonant experiences with art through a child’s eye, CAF rejects the myth that contemporary art is mystifying or elitist demonstrating instead that art is an enriching and stimulating part of the human experience. Flights from Wonder illustrates CAF’s commitment to accessibility to the arts for all audiences, especially by targeting low income and under-served populations via accompanying outreach programs. We believe that Flights from Wonder and our concurrent educational efforts will have a significant, positive and long reaching impact on this community. Artists include: Christopher Chiappa, Liz Craft, Martha Friedman, FriendsWithYou, Jon Pylypchuk, Carolyn Salas, Mindy Shapero, Shinique Smith, and Phoebe Washburn.
