Martin Lubner’s new paintings – the series is title “Flotsam” – are suggestive of being lost at sea, set adrift, or being discarded. Much of the imagery of the well-known expressionist’s new work depicts objects floating in water, or what might be equated to water. There is a sadness to these works, which suggest drowning, having been left behind or overwhelmed. However, there are also moments of hope and triumph, along with a good dose of Lubner’s dry wit. Lubner’s objects and figures hint at a personal and nostalgic narrative. The paintings are also a master painter’s triumphant love/hate battle with his medium and his reflections on art history.
