> DESCRIPTION
A native Angeleno, Cohen has become recognized as one of the few plein-air painters of the built environment of Southern California. A student of Paul Wonner, Cohen was influenced by the Bay Area Figurative School, particularly in his early paintings of still-lifes placed before a window. Later, Cohen began focusing more on the landscape as seen through the framing device of the window, and finally went outdoors to paint the views from the residences of friends who live in the hills of L.A. Once he finds a location he likes, the artist will often return and paint from the same vantage point at different times of day, much like an Impressionist would translate the same scene in changing atmospheric conditions. Cohen’s recent body of work focuses on the historic California Incline, a now heavily trafficked road that angles down the palisades of Santa Monica from the top of the bluffs at Ocean Avenue to Pacific Coast Highway below.
