Is art a lonely pursuit with the artist working by him/herself in the studio? Or is art is supposed to be shared? The city of San Diego has a great number of artists connected to different cultural venues. The colleges are their own creative islands with galleries that feature the work of established artists, faculty and students. How do we connect with our art community?
This exhibition broadens our connections, not only presenting artworks by our faculty but also providing a glimpse of other artists that they admire, have things in common with, or that inspire them. Faculty members invited an artist to show a piece alongside their own. This resulted in some interesting combinations, including two professors who invited their children, now adults and artists themselves, and two teachers who asked former students, now pursuing their art professionally.
Faculty members include Anna Stump, whose provocative painting series titled “Sexy Jesus” was recently featured in the Huffington Post (http://huff.to/nHLqtL). Wendell Kling, Brian Dick, and Grossmont professor Jeff Irwin were highlighted in MCASD’s “Here, Not There” exhibition last year. FACULTY PLUS ONE also brings together our adjunct faculty, who traverse the region teaching at various universities. Diverse approaches to the art making process and a variety of media including, painting, sculpture, photography and video are on display. In addition, on the night of the opening, Yve Laris Cohen, will perform a new text-based live work, drawing upon his ballet training, his lifelong relationship to Mesa College, and his archive of performance detritus.
For the last five years, students in the Museum Studies Program have been curating and organizing exhibitions across the city at places like Voz Alta, Space 4 Art, SUSHI, the San Diego Art Department, neighborhood coffee shops and vacant buildings. This was the beginning of an innovative concept to connect with a larger public, rather than just being focused in our insular college world.
Reinforcing on the idea of the community, Mesa College will be hosting a Pecha Kucha (www.pecha-kucha.org) taking place following the reception. A Pecha Kucha is a 20 second - 20 slide presentation format that will focus on the city’s creative scene through a collaborative lens. Larry Caveney runs the Garage, a relational space that showcases artists who deserve a platform, but do not have the advantage of representation. When Nuvia Crisol Guerra isn’t in her studio, she’s involved in the San Diego community as a curator, promoter and lecturer. Susan Myrland, curatorial director for the ART LABS 2011, single-handedly connected over 150 artists and arts organization to complement the Art San Diego Contemporary Fair. Cheryl Nickel, co-founder of Space 4 Art, has contributed to energize the Downtown area by providing a live/work space for artists. Perry Vasquez is a member of The Border Corps, a performance collaboration exploring the artistic process and the idea of mass creativity. Artist David White founded Agitprop whose goal is to blur the lines between the individual Artist, the Studio, the Gallery and the Neighborhood.
After the presentations there will be time for a Q&A and discussion.
