Portraits of the Art Collector by Contemporary Art Icons

Opening September 10, 2011 at Santa Ana College Main Art Gallery, “Mysterious Objects, Portraits of Joan Quinn”, 2:00 – 5:00 PM, Fine Arts Building “C”.

This one-of-a-kind exhibit features portraits of the collector, Joan Quinn, which were made by such contemporary artists as Chuck Arnoldi, Don Bachardy, Jean-Michel Basquiat, David Glynn, David Hockney, Robert Mapplethorpe, Ed Ruscha, Billy Al Bengston, Alexis Smith, Beatrice Wood and many others.  A group of over 50 never-before-exhibited paintings, drawings, sculptures and photographs by these and many other well-known artists will be presented in this exhibition through November 1, 2011. This is a rare opportunity for art patrons, students, and the general public to view work by important late 20th century and contemporary masters.

Mysterious Objects: Portraits of Joan Quinn: Portraits by more than 50 renowned contemporary artists define one of the Southern California's most dynamic women supporting the arts and artists. Joan Quinn was appointed West Coast Editor of Interview magazine by Andy Warhol and was also Society Editor for the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner. The longest sitting member of the California Arts Council, she remains today a primary NGO delegate to the United Nations. Painter Mel Ramos calls Quinn "a living work of art"; David Hockney admires her zeal as a photographer; and abstract artist Charles Arnoldi notes “She has documented cultural changes in Los Angeles and around the world for the last 50 years…Joan always has her finger on the pulse of artistic momentum.” Joan Quinn is a hidden asset to the region and this show will offer a behind the scenes look at the art world.

This exhibition of selected portraits by these and other famous artists is drawn from a private collection and offers an opportunity to examine their perspective on a woman who has been an influence, a collector and a California taste-maker.

The exhibit dates are September 12 – November 1, 2011.  Gallery hours are Monday – Thursday, 10AM – 2PM and Wednesday evenings, 6:30 – 8:30PM.  Tours may be arranged by calling the main art gallery at 714/564-5615.
