Fresh Paint Art Advisors is pleased to present Text & Texture a group exhibition curated by Peter Frank, featuring works by Fatemeh Burnes, Rhea Carmi, Katherine Chang Liu, Joel King, Farr Ligvani, Kirk Pedersen, Desy Safan-Gerard, Susan Sironi.

“If we understand the title of this show, “Text & Texture,” as a mathematical formula, it is not a sum, but an equivalency. The art shown under this rubric has been assembled not because it adds text to texture (or vice versa), but because it regards text as texture (and vice versa). The artists in this show do not simply add text to texture, but find text in texture. Where you see words and letters in these artworks, you see them as physical, almost tactile, articulations of visual fields. Where you see patterned, scumbled, or otherwise articulated surfaces, you sense that those surfaces spell out something more, some obscure message or phrase that has been buried, perhaps encrypted into the inchoate visual field. As the word “text” can be found embedded in the word “texture,” texts can be found embedded, literally or inferentially, in textures – and textures, in turn, can be “read.” It’s a kind of Braille abstraction.

All language, of course, is a kind of abstraction. Words and letters are not the ideas or even sounds they convey, they are representations – in fact, stylizations, patterned notations – of those ideas and/or sounds. We regard certain marks as letters, and sequences of marks as words and phrases, only because we have been taught the encoding that informs these marks. Perhaps more than ever, contemporary artists remain fascinated, even preoccupied, both with the process of this encoding and with the elaborate marks invested with this code. “Text & Texture” looks at how a few artists, all working in and around Los Angeles, spin out their fascination.

Whether or not these artists actually engage the written word, they have invested their intellectual power in it enough to have it drive their art, however subtly. All are avid readers, some are writers as well as visual artists, at least one manipulates books, and at least one publishes them. Language engages these artists on multiple levels, and that engagement replays itself in various ways in their artwork. Rarely, however, do these artists make obvious their involvement with writing. Many artists, from calligraphers to conceptualists, do exactly that; but the artists in this show, working in a variety of media and formats, take a less overt, more ruminative approach to the written word and verbal gesture. Notably, some of these artists grew up in cultures whose writing retains a direct visual potency, while others have become drawn to such writing precisely because they are, first and foremost, visual artists.

Finally, “Text & Texture” looks at the way language can fade into image without disappearing entirely. Language here has become not simply a good child—seen but not heard—but a friendly ghost—felt at least as much as seen. “     —Peter Frank
