Portrait Paris December 2004 and Portrait #2 Paris December 2004 are the artist's self-portraits filmed in his studio in Paris. In Portrait, Arnold swallows an unseen drink and exhales smoke from an unseen cigarette, while Portrait #2 illuminates the actions that necessitated those functions; one of the artist's hands never leaves the frame, and always with a cigarette or a glass. These two sequences analyze the relationship between intention and consequence, cause and effect. Together Portrait and Portrait #2 distinctly capture the artist's concerns of the relationship between the body and specific time and place with a concentration on routine and fundamental gestures of action.
