Johanna Calle is an artist from Colombia whose artistic medium is drawing in non-traditional configurations. Colombia has an important tradition in drawing, and this edition of the Project Room series intends to give visibility to one of the key figures of recent innovation in this media. Calle experiments with different drawing formats and materials to produce drawings that are conceptual in content, but also challenge our concept of what a drawing is, taking the medium beyond the boundaries between drawing and sculpture or drawing and writing. Johanna Calle’s most recent work explores the qualities of cursive handwriting, as well as different writing systems of transcription such as shorthand or stenography, and their similarities with drawing techniques and aesthetics, to comment on social issues utilizing sources such as music and literature.

For this Project Room, Calle proposes to “study how economic crisis might affect males in developing countries in terms of social behavior. One of the common male roles in Latin American societies is still that of the sole provider, thus the family dominant figure. Decreasing economic power or formal job loss might develop a dependence on other family members, altering gender roles or interrelations between them.”
