Multiple Identities: Crafting the artistic self through narrative, representation, and metaphor

Upstairs at the Market Gallery is pleased to present “Multiple Identities: Crafting the artistic self through narrative, representation, and metaphor,” a four part multi-media exhibition of works by student artists. The exhibition was created in the Contemporary Art Theory and Practice program in the art department at Santa Monica College with Linda G Lopez, Professor of Art.

The theme of the work in this series is the personal and artistic identity as a shape shifting and self-constructed notion. Asked to deconstruct and reappraise their personal “stories” and experiences through art making, the artists included in this exhibition reveal their own multiple, often contradictory identities by exploring such themes as the male and female gaze, longing and loss, time and place, stories, memory and desire, and diaspora.  The work includes a spectrum of media and genres that challenge, confront, perform, or project an authentic perspective regarding the existential nature of the “self”.  The artist’s paintings, performances, installation and photography provide the audience a prismatic lens by which they may view their own notion of the self through a multi-media collaborative series. The opening events are Saturday, June 18 and Saturday, June 25, with further exploration of the themes by selected artists, on Saturday, July 23 and Saturday, July 30.
