In the Main Stairwell
Armory Center for the Arts is pleased to present 3 Surfaces by Yann Novak. This longterm site specific sound and light installation, will be located in the main stairwell of them Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena. The installation, organized by curator Sinéad Finnerty-Pyne, will be on display from May 7 through Spring of 2012. An opening reception, free and open to the public, will take place on Saturday, June 25, from 7-9pm.
3 Surfaces incorporates the unique sounds, natural light, and architectural details of the space as primary materials. The sound piece is formed using field recordings of the space itself, captured during peak activity hours. Using digital filtering and processing, the recordings are transformed into a subtle environmental "tint" to alter how the audience perceives the space. The space will be physically altered using scrims to create three new surfaces above the stairwell, which will allow for the natural light to be filtered through while suggesting a more private, intimate experience.
Yann Novak (b. 1979 Madison, WI) is a sound, video and installation artist living and working in Los Angeles. His work utilizes different forms of digital documentation as a point of departure. Through the digital manipulation of these sound and image files, his works serve as a translation from documents of personal experiences into an open ended autobiographical narrative. By choosing subject matter that is also relatable to the audience, Novak’s work creates a hybrid state, balancing between his own personal history and that of the audience.
Novak’s installations and performances have been presented internationally at prestigious events and venues including American Academy in Rome (Rome, Italy), Decibel Festival (WA), Fiske Planetarium (CO), Henry Art Gallery (WA), Highways Performance Space (CA), Kasini House (VT), Las Cienegas Project (CA), Lawrimore Project (WA), Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (CA), Los Angeles County Museum of Art (CA), Mutek Festival (Montreal, QB), Oboro (Montreal, QB), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (CA), Soundfjord (London, UK), Soundwalk (CA), Suyama Space (WA), TBA Festival (OR), Torrance Art Museum (CA), Western Bridge (WA) and others.
