> DESCRIPTION
507rose is an artist-run space committed to showing emerging artists. The exhibitions are usually open to the public for one night(afterwards by appointment only), in an effort to allow for the work to be performance-based or highly temporal. This condensed communal experience sets up a social space around the work that, at its best, allows for critical discourse, and, at its very least, creates a sense of community important in the sprawling art worlds of LA and beyond. Although the structure of The Juice is Loose is more traditional than previous shows at 507rose, its celebratory and inclusive spirit are de rigueur for the gallery.
The idea of the salon evolved in France in the 19th century as an alternative to the monarchy’s tight control over the exhibition of works of art, and as the current show at 507rose suggests, its possibilities for commentary are still alive and well today. The word salon indicates a way of hanging art, yet it also signals a political gesture against the normal procedure. It marks a place different than the museum, less commercial than the gallery, more inclusive that the private home. The Juice is Loose is a salon-style show of contemporary paintings made by primarily Los Angeles-based artists.
