The Other Toy Story is a project conceived by artist Joyce Dallal as part of an artist residency at the Marlborough School. The idea began with the simple act of cleaning out her son’s room and finding out how difficult it is to dispose of old and broken toys in an environmentally friendly way. The project has grown into a larger conversation about toys, asking questions such as: Why are toys so ubiquitous, what makes them so appealing, where do they come from, what do they teach us, and what do they say about how we view and interact with the world around us? Dallal’s piece Receptacle is a sculptural alternative to throwing old and broken toys in the trash. Essentially a 10 foot tall wire trash can in the shape of a baby, it will be “fed” over the course of the exhibition with toys that are deemed too thrashed to be reused and unable to be recycled. Used and broken toys will be collected in the gallery throughout the exhibition.
