From Monday, May 9 to Wednesday, June 18, 2011, the Slutzky Art Gallery presents It’s about time… Doni Silver Simons’ first solo exhibition in Orange County. The exhibition spans a selection of five years of the artist’s work from 2006 to 2011, including a number of pieces that explore the concept of time through the lens of the Omer – a seven week period of personal refinement in the Jewish calendar that occurs between Passover and Shavuot. Observant Jews mark each night of the Omer by counting.
The paintings and sculpture on view reflect Silver Simons’ signature markings. “I am a mark maker, and have always seen myself as such,” says Silver Simons. “It is a personal language that documents my life. I am always trying to understand time, its accretion, its dissolution, the role of memory, and my relationships in the world as experienced through this time-based perspective,” she notes. It’s about time… invites the viewer to contemplate these issues directly and indirectly, and to connect personal insights to broader societal considerations.
There will be an opening reception and walk through with the artist on June 5th from 2 to 4 p.m. The Slutzky Art Gallery is located at the Merage JewishCommunity Center, 1 Federation Way, Irvine, CA, 92603; 949 435-3400; www.jccoc.org.
