Hilary Taub’s title for her exhibition, “Dialogues”, refers in general to the dialogue an artist has with their materials and the process of art making. And, more specifically, it refers to Taub’s recent body of work in which she has worked over older paintings and the dialogue that takes place between the new work and the older. Taub moves effortlessly from abstraction to figuration and back again. In these paintings, the figure is clearly present, but the approach is from an abstract painter’s perspective. Her paintings are composed of subtle earth colors, atmospheric passages and fluid markings. Taub has a gentle and effortless style that is at once grand yet remains down-to-earth.
