Large-scale diagonal monoliths encased in color torque and float effortlessly on the walls. Salt's work, with no trace of reference, gives the viewer an experience of her abstract vision. Although each work is autonomous, it is clear that there is an evolutionary relationship between the paintings that Salt acknowledges is critical to their meaning. Her choice of the diagonal within a hard-edge format, along with the softness of the colored edges and carefully thought-out proportions unite stillness and dynamism.
A native of New York, Deborah Salt has spent the last decade in LA. Drawn to the ideas of the Light and Space artists, she has managed to find the LA solution to a NY problem; the idea that a perceptual experience and hard-edge minimalism can actually coexist.
