Koplin Del Rio is pleased to announce our debut exhibition of work by emerging figurative artist Judy Nimtz. The series, titled Transfixed, began in 2009 with the idea for a single painting – a solitary, contemplative figure outdoors. Wanting to achieve a “quiet, introspective” mood in the piece, Nimtz used herself as a model, posing in bright sunlight on lava rocks under the ultra blue sky in her native Hawaii. From that first painting came the inspiration for a full body of work. Employing a cool, marble like flesh palette and graceful poses, Nimtz references the genre of 19th century Society Portraiture and the Pre-Raphaelites, such as J.W. Waterhouse. Each piece focuses on the strength of its subject – a figure in isolation, yet boundless. During a study abroad in Italy, taken during her undergraduate studies at the Art Institute of Southern California in Laguna, Nimtz spent time in Venice, Florence, and Rome and was fascinated with the presentation of solitary saints and patrons in 14th c. altarpieces. She would later echo those spatial constructs in her own work, controlling the space by containing her figures in extreme vertical or horizontal formats. Nimtz is a recent MFA graduate of the Laguna College of Art in Laguna Beach, California.
