NOT TO SCALE

Kurt has been a designer his entire career. First working on newspapers, magazines and, for the last 20 years or so, books. Growing up in Los Angeles, Kurt has long been familiar with all the great architecture in the area. With a level of intricacy primarily reserved for those with obsessive compulsive tendencies, Wahlner is a master at pairing astonishingly accurate detail with his envisioned representation of the surrounding natural environment.  Several of Wahlner's works have spanned more than five years in their production as the artist has painstakingly accounted for each individual brick, tile or shingle.  He has carefully observed his subject's natural environment and incorporated much of the surrounding organic features.  Kurt Wahlner's "Not to Scale" exhibit will place these unique and wondrous drawings before the public for the very first time.

ARTIST STATEMENT

"Architectural graphics have traditionally been produced to show how an unbuilt building will look when completed. And so they are configured to show a structure in the best possible light. My drawings of architecture are a little different. In my work, I concentrate on the built environment "as-is" as it were. I purposefully expand the point of view of the frame to include much of a building's setting - how it fits into its environment. Meanwhile, I have always enjoyed looking around people's living quarters. The way people arrange things and the items they surround themselves with have always given me clues to character. When producing one of my drawings, I get to wander at will, and I try to encompass it all - the setting, the structure, the personal details - everything. It's like having a slicing knife, a helicopter and zoom lens all at once. I fall in love with each of my subjects, for I see a nobility in every structure. They make excellent mementos of cherished spaces." - Kurt Wahlner
