The paintings of Paul Donaldson are based on his observations of daily life in Mexico. The artist has spent many hours south of the border observing and preparing studies, focusing on Mexican street life. His paintings are a painstaking process of scrutiny, working and reworking, making careful adjustments, allowing the images to slowly take form. His unique style perfectly captures the dazzling light and palpable atmosphere of his subject.
Donaldson writes of his work: “Although painted in a naturalistic style, I am taken by atmospheric effects, the significance of light and metaphysical depth rather than the precise rendering of the objects. I find harmony in the reality of nature, the simple life of villagers and small details of city life. Also, the tradition o Mexican Ex Votos as a testimony to later visitors inspires the work. The images are filtered through memories, drawings and photos as starting points. I hope for a timeless quiet and a balanced composition.”
Paul Donaldson received a B.A. and M.F.A. from California State University, Long Beach.
