Art from the Island Nation: Transnational Cuba and the Myth of Isolation, a one-day symposium held in conjunction with UCR Sweeney Art Gallery's exhibition The Signs Pile Up: Paintings by Pedro Álvarez, and the publication of the book of the same title by UCR Sweeney Art Gallery and Smart Art Press, will explore the racial, economic, cultural, and iconographic complexities of Cuban identity during the Special Period (which occurred during the 90s) through the work of one of this generation's leading Cuban artists, Pedro Álvarez, whose work addressed the myth of Cuba's isolated state in regards to Cuban identity.
