In her
Paintings from the Landmarks Series Fielden Harper continues her focus on architectural work. Long fascinated by the way in which we choose to enclose our space and aware of the history to be found in the buildings around us, she directs her attention to scenes and structures in and around Santa Monica. Her acrylic paintings are on wood, much of it found at construction sites. The natural grain of the wood gives texture and color to the sky and the foreground as well as referring to the material that makes up much of the buildings themselves.
While botanical art is centuries old, this show of Sally Jacobs' latest pieces has a distinctly contemporary look. Her fruits, flowers and vegetables appear as if they were just plucked from a California farmers market (and many were). Working with her subjects in front of her, she stays true to the flower or plant, but adds a dramatic clarity. Her approach is an unusual one for a watercolorist - she builds color slowly, in a controlled way; each piece represents weeks of concentrated work. Sally has taught botanical art at Otis School of Design and the Los Angeles Arboretum; her work has appeared in juried botanical art shows throughout the country.
John Clendening's first exhibition with TAG Gallery features his apple orchard and Chinese market paintings. The work is inspired by the artist's trips through the California and Virginia apple orchard area and the Chinatown neighborhoods of San Francisco and New York. Celebrating the intrinsic beauty in simple fruit crates and boxes, the artist locates a certain illogic to their arrangement; orderly stacks of methodically posed fruit are positioned next to boxfuls in utter disarray. Through Clendening's hyper-realist command of detail and luscious colors, the works convey the sensuality of the objects in his composed scenes. He brings to life an experience the viewer might not have had and that is a striking achievement.
