About the Speakers
Co-founders of the design think tank Lettuce, Kara Bartelt and Michael Chung believe that good design emerges out of a strong, nuanced understanding of process. Accepting a greater role in production, taking more risks, and understanding a business project from the ground up are the tools needed for architects to reclaim their roles as a primary mechanism in physical production.
Gunnar Hand is a Senior Regional Planner with the Los Angeles County Department of Regional Planning. He is also the Chair of the Planning and Beautification Committee for the newly formed East Hollywood Neighborhood Council, and a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP). His Bachelors Degree in Environmental Design with a major in Planning and minor in Political Science, coupled with a Masters in City and Regional Planning with an Urban Design Certificate from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York has helped to give Gunnar Hand a unique vision.
Mary Morton is the associate curator of painting for the J. Paul Getty Museum. A specialist in 19th century French painting, Dr Morton previously worked as curator for the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. She has contributed to numerous exhibitions and publications including the recent exhibition Courbet and the Modern Landscape.
Steve Roden is a visual and sound artist from Los Angeles. He has been exhibiting since the mid 1980's and has had numerous solo and group exhibitions internationally. His works include sculpture, film/video, sound installation, and performance. Often his work is built in specific natural and architectural environments from which he draws inspiration for his installations, while at the same time drawing attention to those precise locations.
