Scoops presents :
"In Tranced Fixation Dreaming Upon The Object Before You"
Paintings by Brigid Mason
October 6 - November 3, 2010
Reception: Friday, October 8, 7 - 10pm
Brigid Mason paints objects from her collection; items the artist claims she did not actively seek out. All were gifted to the artist by friends, lovers and admirers over the years. Mason thinks of painting as a form of active contemplation and that by painting seemingly familiar objects from direct observation, she actively participates in revealing their mysterious history. Some of the objects in her oeuvre include animal parts, decaying pieces of tattered clothes, playing cards, and plaster casts of teeth.
"The objects that we surround ourselves with in our day-to-day lives offer a window into our experience. We invest objects with our emotions. Sometimes we keep things for reasons we don’t even understand. Certain objects can remain mysterious to us, even when we feel that we know them so well."
Brigid Mason was born in New York City in 1984 and recieved her BFA in Painting (with Honors) from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in 2006. In 2010 she obtained an MFA in drawing and painting at the California College of the Arts (CCA) in San Francisco. She currently resides in Los Angeles.
