> DESCRIPTION

Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto has developed a distinct sculptural idiom using foam, fabric, found materials, and aromatic spices, such as lavender, clove, and turmeric. In 1998, he made his first fabric rooms, stretching membranes of Lycra tulle from gallery walls, ceilings, and floors and inviting barefoot visitors to enter into and pass through cavities that evoke the womb, interiors of churches, sailing vessels, and spaceships. The first major installation in the 4,600-sq.ft. Peter C. Farrell Gallery in the Jacobs Building at the new MCASD Downtown, Neto has created his largest and most intricate installation to date.
