SHOW STARTS AT 7 PM - 11 Come Celebrate The Winter Solstice
December 21 through February 14, 2008.
Each photograph in this exhibit was chosen by the photographers to represent their love of the art, and none of the work will be for sale.
Amateur literally translates from its Latin and later French origins as "lover" or someone who does something purely for "the love of it" without concern for other gain. Early photographers welcomed the designation and eagerly considered themselves amateurs in this sense of the word and ... most of us embraced our scopophilia for the same reason.
Eadweard R. York took the photo below. It is one of the first photographs that he took when started out documenting the streets, and the people who inhabit the streets as a very young man. Eadweard chose this image because it is a powerful historical image. It always reminded him of his roots, as he was once homeless for a short time as a youth, and is one of the reasons he became a photographer after a well known photographer saw it, and hired him as his assistant. It also kept him pure, and not commercialized to his love of the art of photography.
"The archival silver print in this exhibition is from the first or second roll of film when I first started shooting in the early 80's. I print all of my own photos, and I usually only shoot 1 – 2 photos of a subject when I am on the streets. I was leaning over the subject as he was passed out. He suddenly opened his eyes, and screamed, and I snapped the photograph, and walked away shaking. Sometimes it feels like I have taken their souls. When I shoot photos of the homeless. I do it for historical purposes to document this segment of society that is often overlooked, and shunned." Eadweard
