In her second exhibition, psychoanalyst/painter Julia Schwartz revisits the theme of the subject as irrevocably embedded in its world; faces and figures painted in various media emerge and dissolve back into mysterious, smoldering grounds. Along with Schwartz’s heavily impastoed canvases she paints on sheet aluminum, scratching and sanding through her imagery, allowing intervals of a ghostlike sheen to seep out. “My aim in these paintings is that the emotional world of the subject be revealed in the color, texture, and mark-making themselves.”
